Julien Christian Lutz, credited professionally as Director X, is a Canadian film and music video director and producer. The protégé of pioneering director Hype Williams, Lutz has been noted for directing high-budget, visually distinctive videos for popular artists, including Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Rihanna, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Fifth Harmony, Wiz Khalifa, Usher, John Mayer, Korn, Iggy Azalea, Sean Paul, and many more. After his experience as a victim of public gun violence in Toronto, he embarked on a journey to understand why someone would shoot a target in a public environment, running the risk of endangering themselves and others. Soon after, he co-founded Operation Prefrontal Cortex with his childhood friend Danell Adams, in partnership with Toronto-based organizations Mindfulness Everyday, Hoame, and others. Operation Prefrontal Cortex is a program harnessing the power of mindfulness and meditation to help reduce the incidents of gun and mass violence in Toronto, and in this interview, Lutz speaks to Ajani Charles about meditation, mindfulness, violence in Toronto and elsewhere, childhood, the COVID-19 pandemic, and more.
