Can I use GitHub Pages for my personal website? ›

You can use GitHub Pages to host a website about yourself, your organization, or your project directly from a repository on GitHub.

Use the templates for personal or commercial projects, but don't sell them! Four free templates released.

Making a repository private

If you're using GitHub Free for personal accounts or organizations, some features won't be available in the repository after you change the visibility to private. Any published GitHub Pages site will be automatically unpublished.

This is all possible thanks to the GitHub Pages feature, which is GitHub's very own free hosting service. Using GitHub Pages, you can create a website by simply publishing static HTML, JavaScript, and CSS files from GitHub's repository.

GitHub Pages supports using custom domains, or changing the root of your site's URL from the default, like octocat.github.io , to any domain you own.

If you're using GitHub Desktop, all you need to do is click Push Origin to make your changes live. Whenever you make changes to your site, you'll need to repeat steps #3 and #4 again. Or, you can purchase the premium version of Simply Static to simplify deployments to GitHub Pages.

Although it's not mandatory, it's common for recruiters to want to see your GitHub and sometimes also ask for a Portfolio, so why not combine the two? GitHub is the ideal place because there you can showcase examples of your code, your progress, your studies, and initiatives you've been involved in.

GitHub Pages is available in public repositories with GitHub Free and GitHub Free for organizations, and in public and private repositories with GitHub Pro, GitHub Team, GitHub Enterprise Cloud, and GitHub Enterprise Server.

Typically, there are two kinds of websites: Static and Dynamic. GitHub supports hosting a static website but if you have a dynamic website, you can choose another service that can provide you with better functionalities and support.

Personal accounts

Your personal account can own resources such as repositories, packages, and projects. Any time you take any action on GitHub.com, such as creating an issue or reviewing a pull request, the action is attributed to your personal account. Each personal account uses either GitHub Free or GitHub Pro.

GitHub Pages is not intended for or allowed to be used as a free web-hosting service to run your online business, e-commerce site, or any other website that is primarily directed at either facilitating commercial transactions or providing commercial software as a service (SaaS).
